Latvians head to the polls
Latvian citizens seem to spend a lot of time at the ballot box. If it’s not a regularly scheduled Saeima or municipal election, or voting for members of the European Parliament, then it’s a referendum on some hot issue. Latvian citizens living abroad — recent migrants as well as émigrés who left their homeland during World War II and later regained their Latvian citizenship — also get to cast ballots. Biedrība “Par latviešu valodu” 9. februārī Rīgā atklāja akciju mudināt latviešus piedalīties 18. februāra referendumā un balsot pret grozījumiem Latvijas satversmē, kas noteiktu krievu valodu kā otro valsts valodu. Akcija ieskaita televīzijas reklāmas videoklipu ar nosaukumu “Celies un ej”, kurā dažādi sabiedrībā pazīstami cilvēki aicina skatītāju piedalīties referendumā.
