Vasks compilation of works exceptional
May 16, 2012
Though Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks has achieved success and fame with compositions for solo instruments, string quartets, orchestras, piano, among many other instruments, some of his most powerful and memorable works are his choir songs. The addition of text and language (particularly the Latvian language), in combination with the exceptional skill of the world-class Latvian Radio Choir, make his choir songs particularly haunting and emotionally affecting.
This is clearly evidenced on Plainscapes, a 2012 release by Finnish label Ondine, featuring the Latvian Radio choir performing a number of Vasks’ secular choir works, conducted by Sigvards Kļava – an album that is, in my opinion, destined to be one of the best and most significant Latvian classical music releases of 2012.

Trip west of Urals seeks evidence of fate of Latvian deportees
March 25, 2012
Our bus stopped suddenly on the side of the only road leading out of the time-warp village of Lesnoy just west of the Ural Mountains in Russia. We piled out of the bus and our guide told us that this was the site of Vyatlag Camp No. 4, one of the hard labor camps of the notorious Soviet Gulag system in the 1940s and 1950s.

How many Latvians watch The Late Show?
April 28, 2012
Occasionally Latvia gets a mention on a popular late-night US talk show. The Late Show’s David Letterman briefly mentioned Latvia on his show on 24th April. Letterman’s reason for playing the Latvian national anthem was to work out how many Latvians watch his show. One audience member stood up in reverence for the anthem - proof he was the only “Latvian” in the house that day.
