Might be interesting for some not here in Latvia to see some of the campaigns that are recently starting up in the run-up to the election. Im waiting for the new Slesers promises billboard (I wonder how he went with the 800 Ls average wage?) but in the meantime I will have to make do with the political newspapers arriving in the mailbox. Par Labu Latviju! ( dont forget the exclamation mark) sent this one the other day…. my first reaction was WTF?? ...and then I remembered where I was.

Anyone else come across some other examples?

This one is apparently supposed to be taken down.

Whats the reason for taking it down? Is it the placement, looks like its been temporarily placed on the footpath.

It has to do with the city regulations on giant boards like that and that the PLL in its request said there will be a meeting with the voters. No meeting has been held there. The city and municipal information stands are exempted from the requirement, I guess.

Looks to be an interesting campaign season, what with PLL bombarding the land with a blimp! A flying billboard avoids all of the messiness the one at the Rīga Central Station ran into.
The droning white specter with El Buldozer plastered on it was supposed to be gracing Daugavpils with it’s presence. Apparently it will not be able to do so, as it was damaged by apparent vandals. Of course your blimp will get damaged if you have a big red bullseye on the side of it!

Pēteris C., taking target practice?

I found this one very interesting. The story goes that PLL has rented a car parking space for a month and put its van there, right outside the Vienotiba office. Vienotiba reacted by showing the van with green balloons. The PLL responded by issuing the press release saying that Vienotiba supports PLL.

In other news, Visu Latvijai’s Imants Parādnieks is going forward with his demand to undergo a lie detector test with Šķēle.

Oh, and the city apparently changed its mind about the Slesers’ board.

Heres another one - this time mannequins placed around town

http://www.ir.lv/2010/9/3/atbildiba-agitacijai-neatlauti-izvietojusi-lelles

Atbildiba also have placed a few stencils spraypainted on the footpath around town. Seems like local laws dont seem to mean much when it comes to electioneering!

Also, a few more that have caught my eye…

- SC have the most naive and hollow slogan of ” Viss bus labi”....
- Slesers isnt making wage promises but does promise that “taxes will go down AND everyone will pay tax!” Its very indicative on peoples attitude to paying tax that this needs to be part of your platform.

“Lattelecom” TV liedz pieeju filmai “Pēdējais Lāčplēsis”.

Comment from one Alejandro:

Vysu lobu,

This ad - well actually I don’t know what on earth to say about this election ad.  It’s for the social democratic coalition, shown is its leader, and the caption at the bottom just endorses a graduated income tax.  Ummm….. enjoy? : )

There’s of course Dinevics in the same style. Near my house, there is a bilingual ad from For a Good Latvia. It is worth noting that the bilingual part is only under Aleksejs Seinins, the publisher of Chas newspaper.

How clever!!  I loved those political ads, Aleksej.  Even my husband who does not speak Latvian got the gist of them.
