Hello,
I’m looking for any information about my grandfather Kazimiras Dvorions/Kazimieras Dvarionas, born in Lithuania aprx in 1883,granted Latvian citizenship in 1920 (according to Latvian archival reseach),married a Latvian woman and lived in Riga until at least 1943.I’d also appreciate any information about his Latvian family or his burial place.
Latvian archives offered their assistance but it might take 9-12 months.
Information may be provided in Russian or Lithuanian as well.
Looking forward and thanks in advance.

After visiting my relatives I “came into” some interesting photos ,one of them showing (to my surprise)
my grandfather’s “Konditereja un maiznica K.DVORIANUS” located at Matisa iela nr. 86a/later at or renamed Gertrudas iela nr115d63 in Riga on 11 April 1933.  Tel.91492/31702.
Has anyone ever come across this name or can provide any links as where to look for any list of the old streets of Riga, etc? Thanks in advance.
So,this is the photo of it with my grandfather and his Latvian wife on the right.

P.S.
Is the cat in the left corner a real one or a gost?Haven’t noticed it before!  :-)

Valencija,
Your grandfather’s „Konditoreja” indeed was at the place you describe. I knew the place very well as in those years before the war I lived in Valmieras iela. It was only couple minutes walk to fetch some bread and treat myself of delicious „ magoņu maizītes”. Number 86 was only couple shops from the corner of Valmieras iela and opposite the local coblers shop(our friends). All that was of course pre-war years. Don’t remember seeing any konditorejas 3 years ago when I visited those parts .

Felikss

PS. I do have a 1930.ies map of Riga.

Talivaldis,
thank you very much for the first piece of news about my grandfather’s business in 1933. I’ve checked on the Latvian Google and found out the houses are still there ,one of them is on sale.Amazing!I guess the konditereja must have been nationalized by the Soviets ,therefore there are other shops and offices nowadays in the buildings mentioned.I should visit Riga in summer to see everything with my own eyes.
ALAvo,the member, has already provided some plans but I’d appreciate yours as well.
Maybe you’ll remember some more detais later.

Sorry I can’t offer any information on your family members. I do like your photo’s links. You have to love old family photo’s. I too had a grandfather who had a business in Riga. I know how difficult it is getting information from that time period. I was born in a DP camp in Germany and getting information on myself was a challenge. I’m glad my family keep old photo’s of those earlier times, thirties and forties. I did find a second cousin on my grandmothers side living in Riga. She was able to verify many of the photo’s I have with her grandparents. Wish you well on your search.

Egit,
thank you very much for your interesting story and the photos. It must have been fun to sit under such exotic equipment!Yes,I’ve also heard similar breath-taking stories of Lithuanians in DP camps, Valdas Adamkus, our ex-president, among them.
Though I started my research half a year ago,I’ve already learnt some interesting facts.Of course,I wish I had asked a lot of questions when my granny was still alive. But maybe I was too young for it then..
I am also very much impressed by people’s willingness to help in this matter.
Best regards,
Valentina

Egit,
thank you very much for the link.I’ve already found one photo of this street but this one is a bit different. It has just dawned on me that we are speaking about different buildings!Your link is about Nr.86,but the address of the konditereja was 86A.On the other hand, the numeration of buildings in the Soviet period might undergo some changes.I wonder whom this house belongs to now.Are there any links where one get some informatio about the history of buildings, streets in Riga?
Some time later my grandfather moved the konditereja to Gertrudes iela.

The building at Matisa street 86a can be viewed at:

and at Gertrudes 115 at:
