Aleksejs et al.,

“Also, it’s interesting that Estonia has two orthodox churches. One that serves under the Moscow Patriarchate and another that is independent of it. “

In that case, would the independent one not be called the Estonian Orthodox Church ?

Visu labu,

Google would be helpful, wouldn’t it? Or wikipedia?

Ahaa !  Things begin to look clearer.  The independent church in Estonia is a Greek Orthodox Church.
Before the discussiion started here ,I was aware of only the Russian Orthodox Church and the Greek Orthodox Church.  Then I found out that there is a Latvian Orthodox Church.

Being an outside observer on the sideline, I suspect that in the orthodox church hierarchy not everybody is happy with a Latvian Orthodox Church.

May the ” kavorka” of the Latvian Orthodox Church grow and prosper. ( Joke, no offense meant).

Visu labu,

Don’t hold your breath Aleks.  Seen neither, have no intention to.  I know the story.

ak,
trying to imitate Vidas’ condensation technique, with a minimum of pathos.

Andrej, the comments about the Soviet Story were directed at ambersun.

It is my understanding that at one point during the last century, the Latvian Orthodox Church was under the patriarchate of Constantinople, but right now it serves under the patriarchate of Moscow.

I’ve read the debate in the Saeima—it’s available freely online at http://www.periodika.lv—about giving a catholic bishop a cathedral and an apartment back in 1922. The arguments were quite interesting: like the Catholic bishop needs a cathedral because he is far away, without a phone, etc. The bishop at the time lived in Aglona. And the Saeima picked the then-Lutheran Jekaba church to be the Catholic cathedral and the Russian Orthodox St. Alexey church (now Ave Sol concert hall) to be the bishop’s apartment. Once the bishop moved to Riga, he became an archbishop.
