Hello from London
I am a fiddle player and writer, and I’m interested in fiddle playing all round the world. I have a website at http://www.fiddlingaround.co.uk, where I describe the fiddles, fiddle players, style and repertoire from many different countries. I am now trying to create a page on the Baltic countries and I would be delighted if anyone could tell me anything about fiddle playing in Latvia. For example, what kind of tunes do people play, what is the most popular fiddle tune, what kind of ornamentation or bowing is used, who are the best players and what is the origin of the giga or trough-fiddle. In fact, anything at all that fiddlers from other countries might find interesting!
best wishes

Ok, I’m not really knowledgable about fiddle music, or any music made with a violin, for that matter.

I suggest you start by looking at http://www.li.lv . There is so much information there!  Look under ‘culture’ and then click on ‘music in Latvija’.  The heading under folk music is where you might get the most info.

Some of the more well known (to me) folk music violinists are Ilga Reizniece and Julgi Stalte.
