Artist’s exhibit set for embassy

“Explorer / Meklētājs,” an exhibit of photographs by Sniedze Ruņģis, runs from Sept. 25 to Oct. 2 in the Embassy of Latvia, 2304 Massachusetts Ave. N.W., Washington, D.C. Ruņģis describes the installation as an effort “to enlighten us about the phenomenal network of sacred sites which criss-crosses Latvia.” The artist will be present for the duration of the exhibit, according to the embassy’s website. The exhibit will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4-6 p.m. Sept. 25 through Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 26, and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 2. Brooklyn exhibit includes Latvians

“Lineage,” an exhibition by the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition, runs from Sept. 25 to Oct. 31 at 499 Van Brunt St., Red Hook, Brooklyn. The exhibit includes work by Latvian artists Laila Bībelnieks, Anna Annus Hagen, Gita Treimanis and Zane Treimanis. Queensland

University of Latvia anniversary to be held in Brisbane

The Brisbane Latvian community will celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the University of Latvia at 2 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Brisbane Latvian House, 24 Church Ave., Buranda. Inta Gertnere will be the keynote speaker with a lecture about gifted children, their traits and education. Wine and snacks will be available after the presentation. Admission is by donation.

New South Wales

Professor to speak about collider

A commemoration of the founding of the University of Latvia is scheduled at 3 p.m. Sept. 25 in the Sydney Latvian House, 32 Parnell St., Strathfield. Professor Juris Reinfelds will speak on “Lielais hadronu kolaideris.” Refreshments will be available after the presentation. The Combined Fraternities of Sydney is scheduled to hold its annual komeršs at 6 p.m.

Barbeque dinner marks close of season

A barbeque dinner to mark the closing of the season is scheduled at 4 p.m. Sept. 25 at Camp Sidrabene, 5100 Appleby Line, Milton West. The event includes a lottery, music and other entertainment. Admission to the dinner and dessert table is CAD 20. For further information, visit www.sidrabene.org.

Žīgure to address university commemoration

A commemoration of the founding of the University of Latvia is scheduled at 4 p.m. Sept. 25 in the Latvian Ev. Lutheran Church of Minnneapolis and St. Paul, 3152 17th Ave. S., Minneapolis. Writer and former diplomat Anna Žigure of Latvia will make an address titled, “Es nezinu, bet mani senči zina…”, followed by a performance by the folk ensemble Teiksma. Admission is by donation starting at USD 10, but students get in free. Refreshments will be available. The event is sponsored by the Dzintra sorority.

Despite 25 years of making music, Bumerangs has just two albums

Bumerangs, from the northern Latvian city of Valka, has long been a Latvian schlager music institution. Celebrating its 25th anniversary in December 2011, the band has been one of the hardest working—playing, in some years, hundreds of concerts, and entertaining audiences not just in Latvia, but elsewhere in the world.

Biedrība “Par latviešu valodu” 9. februārī Rīgā atklāja akciju mudināt latviešus piedalīties 18. februāra referendumā un balsot pret grozījumiem Latvijas satversmē, kas noteiktu krievu valodu kā otro valsts valodu. Akcija ieskaita televīzijas reklāmas videoklipu ar nosaukumu “Celies un ej”, kurā dažādi sabiedrībā pazīstami cilvēki aicina skatītāju piedalīties referendumā.

For upcoming language referendum, absentee ballot applications top 1,200

The hot-button language referendum scheduled Feb. 18 apparently has lots of voters abroad interested in letting their voice be heard, if figures from absentee ballot requests are any indication.
