Latvian fiber arts group to meet
All those interested in sewing, knitting and weaving traditional designs may meet with other like-minded people of the “Brisbanes rokdarbnieču kopa” at 1 p.m. Feb. 26 in the Brisbane Latvian House, 24 Church Ave., Buranda. Meetings are held on the last Sunday of each month.

“Cepums” activities for children
The “Cepums” biweekly cooking and language activity for children is scheduled at 3 p.m. Feb. 26 in the Brisbane Latvian House, 24 Church Ave., Buranda. The activities teach children how to prepare simple Latvian foods as well as give them the opportunity to meet with other children, sing songs, play games and learn the basics of the Latvian language. Instruction takes place in both Latvian and English. Mothers and fathers are also welcome to join their children in the kitchen. Kalpaks commemoration
The Daugavas Vanagi of Brisbane will host a commemoration of Col. Oskars Kalpaks and the Latvian Legion at 3 p.m. March 3. Juris Merija will speak about the “Studentu rota.” Admission is by donation.

The Brisbane chapter of the Daugavas Vanagi hosts an afternoon of playing the card game zolīte beginning at noon March 17 in the Brisbane Latvian House, 24 Church Ave., Buranda. Participation is AUD 5 and all are welcome.

Archives, material culture are subjects of conference
A conference devoted to the archives and material culture of the Latvian exile is scheduled April 12-14 at the Immigration History Research Center, University of Minnesota, Elmer L. Andersen Library, 222 21st Ave. S., Minneapolis. The goals of the conference are to create guidelines for documenting and preserving the history and material culture of the Latvian exile; training American Latvian organizations how to work with archives and material culture; and developing a network for future work in documenting and preserving exile culture. The conference is organized by the American Latvian Association in cooperation with the IHRC and the Rīga-based Latvieši Pasaulē museum. For further information, in Latvian, visit www.alausa.org.

Despite 25 years of making music, Bumerangs has just two albums
Bumerangs, from the northern Latvian city of Valka, has long been a Latvian schlager music institution. Celebrating its 25th anniversary in December 2011, the band has been one of the hardest working—playing, in some years, hundreds of concerts, and entertaining audiences not just in Latvia, but elsewhere in the world.

Biedrība “Par latviešu valodu” 9. februārī Rīgā atklāja akciju mudināt latviešus piedalīties 18. februāra referendumā un balsot pret grozījumiem Latvijas satversmē, kas noteiktu krievu valodu kā otro valsts valodu. Akcija ieskaita televīzijas reklāmas videoklipu ar nosaukumu “Celies un ej”, kurā dažādi sabiedrībā pazīstami cilvēki aicina skatītāju piedalīties referendumā.

For upcoming language referendum, absentee ballot applications top 1,200
The hot-button language referendum scheduled Feb. 18 apparently has lots of voters abroad interested in letting their voice be heard, if figures from absentee ballot requests are any indication.
