Maryland
Sudrabavots performs in festival
The Latvian folk ensemble Sudrabavots performs at 5 p.m. Feb. 4 during the Folklore Society of Greater Washington Mid-Winter Festival. The performance takes place in the Takoma Park Middle School, 7611 Piney Branch Road, Takoma Park. Tickets at the door are USD 13 for adults and USD 5 for children ages 6-12. New York
Super Bowl party set in Yonkers
Celebrate the Super Bowl the New York Latvian way at the Super Bowl Party beginning at 5 p.m. Feb. 5 in the Latvian Ev. Lutheran Church of New York, 254 Valentine Lane, Yonkers. Admission is USD 20 (children under 16 will be admitted free) and includes watching the game on a big screen with projected TV, food, soda, wine and beer. Proceeds will benefit the work of the congregation’s Northern Region and the upkeep of the Yonkers church. All are welcome, even those who are not sports fanatics and don’t understand American football. General information about the game can be found on the NFL page www.nfl.com/rulebook. The two teams that make it to the Super Bowl will play at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind., and kick-off time is approximately 6:30 p.m. EST. Madonna will perform at half-time. The party is organized by the New York Latvian Church - Northern Committee.

Minnesota
Archives, material culture are subjects of conference
A conference devoted to the archives and material culture of the Latvian exile is scheduled April 12-14 at the Immigration History Research Center, University of Minnesota, Elmer L. Andersen Library, 222 21st Ave. S., Minneapolis. The goals of the conference are to create guidelines for documenting and preserving the history and material culture of the Latvian exile; training American Latvian organizations how to work with archives and material culture; and developing a network for future work in documenting and preserving exile culture. The conference is organized by the American Latvian Association in cooperation with the IHRC and the Rīga-based Latvieši Pasaulē museum. For further information, in Latvian, visit www.alausa.org.

Latvian State Television (Latvijas Televīzija, or LTV) is testing a new channel aimed at Latvians abroad, the head of the service told a radio audience on Jan. 2.

Secular choral music by Vasks featured on new Finnish label release
The Finnish record label Ondine, in cooperation with Latvijas koncerti, has released Plainscapes, a collection of Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks’ choral music performed by the Latvian Radio Choir and conducted by Sigvards Kļava.

Latvia’s official Facebook page, featuring video of a folksy white-haired man tossing logs into a stove, has been unveiled by the Latvian Institute, the government’s information and public relations agency.
