Tourist book on Rīga published in nine languages

May 01, 2009

A tourist guide to Latvia’s capital city, written by Rīga Vice Mayor Andris Ārgalis and available in nine languages, has been released by the publishing house Nacionālais apgāds.

“In writing this book,” Ārgalis said in a May 1 press release announcing release of Rīga, “I wanted to draw the attention of Rīga residents and city guests to the interesting details of Rīga’s splendid buildings—towers, attics, facades, cornices, ornaments, balconies, Rīga’s lions and angels.”

Among the approximately 40 areas of the city examined in the book are the Dome Square, St. Peter’s Church, the Esplanade, and several parks and boulevards.

The book is available in Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Latvian, Russian, Spanish and Swedish.

Andris Straumanis is editor of Latvians Online.

I just hope the translations are up to scratch! A fair few publishing houses (not to mention government institutions) in Latvia have the habit of not getting their manuscripts checked over by specialists/native speakers of the target language (although it is a fallacy to believe that every native speaker is a good editor ... or a good translator, for that matter!). Without due care, a lot of pretty books can end up stagnating on shelves in Jānis Roze and Valters un Rapa ... a bit of humility as far as perceptions of foreign language proficiency is concerned would not go astray!

I like that!the translations are helpful for anyone, because we need to go to some places and that can help us to do any things you want to... congratulations for that.

Despite 25 years of making music, Bumerangs has just two albums

Bumerangs, from the northern Latvian city of Valka, has long been a Latvian schlager music institution. Celebrating its 25th anniversary in December 2011, the band has been one of the hardest working—playing, in some years, hundreds of concerts, and entertaining audiences not just in Latvia, but elsewhere in the world.
